When your local piercing store has a deal that's hard to pass up - you spontaneously get a new piercing. I was actually torn between getting my conch pierced or my helix. I keep hearing horror stories about people's helix experiences, especially with healing, so I decided to get my conch instead.
I don't even know why I felt nervous, considering I have my tragus pierced. But there I was, trying to convince myself that this was a great idea and repeating "the pain will only last seconds" as my mantra. Honestly, I think I have a higher pain tolerance than I think I do because the pain wasn't so bad - just a little pressure and pinch and then voila, my right ear had a new piercing! There was some stinging and pressure I felt after I left the store but thankfully it went away.
Healing - I decided not to purchase the piercing store's after care. I was reflecting back on my healing experience with my tragus piercing (it was bad) and remembered that salt and warm water helped healed my tragus fast. The piercer advised to clean the new piercing twice a day and to avoid putting pressure on the side. If you're a side sleeper, this is something to consider! My healing routine was to avoid sleeping on the side that had my piercing and to clean my piercing with warm salt water in the morning and at night with a Q-tip. I liked using a Q-tip because I used one end to clean the front end of the earring and piercing and then the other end to do the same to the back end.
I remember on my 2nd day of having my conch piercing, I was very proud of how I was avoiding touching my piercing and keeping up with my care routine for it. But then that night, when I went to freshen up before bed, I had so much blood coming down on the right side of my neck. I was so confused because I never touched my piercing and was doing so well taking care of it (or so I thought). Since it was hard for me to see, I asked for my sister's help and she did say that she saw a little clump of blood at the back of the piercing. I used Q-tips and warm salt water to clean up the piercing and a towel to clean the blood off my neck. Thankfully, that was the only time I experienced that. For the next week or so, while cleaning my piercing I would find dried up blood.
It's been almost 4 weeks now since I got my piercing and it has healed great. There isn't as much pressure, I can comfortably sleep on my right side and I'm not cleaning dried up blood anymore.
If you choose to get your conch piercing, I say go for it! I think this piercing is so cute and I can't wait until I'm comfortable enough to switch the earring.
With love and light,
C
